Eagle Rock Loves You

I was selected by Outpost for Contemporary Art in Los Angeles, CA, to participate in Intersections 2009. In response to a New York Times article highlighting the plight of the independent shop-owner in the Los Angeles neighborhood of Eagle Rock, Outpost arranged for several artists to collaborate with businesses at the intersection of Eagle Rock Blvd and Colorado Blvd in an effort to drive new traffic through their doors.

I organized a neighborhood potlatch, inviting all of the businesses in Eagle Rock to give away something they no longer needed. I secured a vacant storefront, displayed the donated items, and held a one-day event. I advertised the event with fliers and a Craigslist post.

There was a line forming around the block when I arrived at the storefront on the morning of the event. I opened the doors at 10am. Everything was gone within 15 minutes. It was a frenzied free-for-all. I stayed in the space for a spell as passersby peaked in and out. About an hour later a mother and son returned with an arm load of things from home that they wished to donate. Those items quickly vanished. I closed up shop and walked about to see the other installations. As I perused, I saw a large number of the individuals who loaded up on free goods getting coffee, eating sandwiches, shopping for trinkets. Success!
